Man duped by woman pretending to be presidents secretary

first_imgA high-ranking Disy official was the victim of a woman who allegedly tricked him into giving her €22,000 by pretending to be the manager of a high-return investment fund, it was reported on Wednesday.According to the police, the man reported that the suspect, who was remanded for seven days on Tuesday, had also introduced herself as the secretary of President Anastasiades. He said that the 43-year-old woman had tricked him into giving her the money between January 2014 and last Sunday.Politis reported that the complainant, a 57-year-old Disy official and civil servant, reported that he began giving money to the suspect on January 2014 when she introduced herself as the president’s secretary and the manager of an investment fund, which supposedly invested in a US-based Swiss bank. Following her arrest the 43-year-old suspect told police she was unemployed.She allegedly told him that high-ranking political party and government officials were involved in the investment fund, which through the US stock market, yielded at least €500,000 but could rise to billions.The man told police he was initially giving the suspect between €100 and €300 in cash every ten days, as she had told him that to be able to participate in the scheme, he had to make regular contributions. By the beginning of May, the 57-year-old told police he had given her €22,000.But the suspect, according to the report, took it even further.
