Typhoon Kammuri accelerates, gains strength en route to PH Commissioner Adam Silver, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Bulls executives Michael Reinsdorf and John Paxson were on hand Friday for the announcement on the United Center floor.Silver said Chicago faced “a lot of competition” to bring it back and the city’s plan put it “over the top.”FEATURED STORIESSPORTSWATCH: Drones light up sky in final leg of SEA Games torch runSPORTSSEA Games: Philippines picks up 1st win in men’s water poloSPORTSMalditas save PH from shutoutRenovations in and around the arena, a new 10,000-seat facility on the Near South Side and Emanuel’s desire helped bring in this one. So did a change of heart by the Bulls. For years, chairman Jerry Reinsdorf opposed hosting the game because of concerns about displacing season ticketholders. But with son Michael — the president and chief operating officer — assuming more authority and grandson Joey in favor, he relented. “I’m sure we would have been here sometime earlier in the last 30 years (had the Bulls been interested),” Silver said. “When the mayor and Michael Reinsdorf showed interest, it put them back to the top of the list in a way just because we like to rotate around the league. It’s a major city, and we haven’t been here in a long time.” “We’ve been going for so many years,” Michael Reinsdorf said. “At the end of the day, I tried to explain it to my dad. I don’t think he’s been to an (NBA) All-Star game since 1988. I tried to explain to him the difference now than what it was like when we hosted last. It’s just such a great impact to the city.”There was some thought that the 2019, 2020 and 2021 All-Star games would go to teams with new arenas. Golden State, Sacramento, Milwaukee and Detroit have all either recently constructed new homes or have one being built. But the schedule also got thrown off a bit after North Carolina passed a law restricting the rights of LGBT people. The league moved the 2017 All-Star game from Charlotte to New Orleans in response. After North Carolina passed a compromise bill limiting anti-discrimination protections for lesbians, gays, bisexual and transgender people, the NBA gave Charlotte the 2019 game.As for 2020?ADVERTISEMENT QC cops nab robbery gang leader, cohort Kammuri turning to super typhoon less likely but possible — Pagasa “There were several other cities that were interested,” Silver said. “We try over time to take care of all the cities that do want to have an All-Star game. I think it becomes a function of timing. I think for some of the other cities that were building, some of the refurbishments that are planned had not been completed yet, had not been finalized in terms of financing so the timing just didn’t work out. It’s really more a function of scheduling.”The United Center opened in August 1994. But it has been undergoing a bit of a transformation in recent years. The biggest change is the construction of an addition adjacent to the arena. It houses offices as well as a Bulls and Blackhawks team store and concessions. The Bulls moved into a new practice facility across the street a few years ago, and the Blackhawks will be moving into a new one nearby in a few weeks. The 10,000-seat Wintrust Arena that just opened a few miles away on the city’s Near South Side will host some All-Star events as will Navy Pier.“We’re excited not just holding a basketball game, but of hosting the world because now the NBA has gone from … an American game held here in the United States to a world event,” Emanuel said. The mayor has pushed hard to land high-profile events such as the NFL and NHL drafts in recent years. But this will be the first major All-Star game in the city since Major League Baseball held its Midsummer Classic on the South Side in 2003. The NHL last had it in Chicago in 1991.Silver isn’t concerned about having the All-Star game in a cold-weather city. Most events are indoors, though he acknowledged snow can disrupt air travel. When Jordan put on his show in 1988, Silver was just a law student at the University of Chicago, sitting in an upper level at the Stadium. He figures to have a better view this time. Omkar Singh wins gold for India in 10m air pistol event at the Commonwealth Games with 681.8 points.More details are awaited.
In the aftermath of the spot-fixing episode during the Pakistan-England Test series last year, the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) has geared itself up for the upcoming World Cup.ICC chief executive officer Haroon Lorgat said here on Tuesday that the ACSU, an independent arm of the game’s world governing body, has tightened its belt for the 45-day tournament beginning on February 17 with an opening ceremony in Dhaka. The first match will be played between India and Bangladesh on February 19 in the same venue.”We have prepared well and will deploy more people. Yesterday and today the whole staff of ACSU assembled and prepared a strategy. We can handle any situation. If needed, we will deploy additional officials,” he said at an MoU- signing ceremony between the ICC and Hyundai, its new car partner from 2011- 2015.Lorgat also said if betting was legalised the incidents of spotfixing and match-fixing could be brought down.”If betting syndicates are legalised then it will be easy to regulate. Where it is not regulated it will go underground. If betting is legalised then it will be far easier to manage the issue of temptation towards corruption,” he said.”In countries like Australia, England, there is a regulatory industry. So we would like to find a way in which the whole industry can be regulated and that’s what we are exploring.” Betting is illegal in India and Pakistan. But in neighbouring Sri Lanka, its Parliament passed legislation in November to legalise betting and gambling in the island nation. Now licenses will be issued for people to run casinos etc.advertisementIn December, after Pakistani players allegedly bowled no balls in exchange for money in a Test against England, former India captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi touched upon the raging issue, saying that it ” hurts” to hear that world betting syndicates have roots in India.”Everybody said the money (for betting and fixing) emanated from India. That is an accusation that hurts but it rings true, especially for those of us who live in this country and have been reading about the scams that have been taking place in the last few days and weeks,” he said at an event.Interestingly, Indian courts have also made observations on the controversial topic. A Delhi court in October even commented that Parliament should consider legalising it. ” It is high time that our legislature seriously considers legalising the entire system of betting online or otherwise so that enough revenues can be generated to fund various infrastructural requirements for the common man and thus check the lucrative business in organised crime,” said additional sessions judge Dharmesh Sharma. But members of Parliament have been almost unanimous in shooting down hints of a debate on legalising betting, which rears its head usually during international cricket matches in India and often abroad too.On hot-spot technology, Lorgat reiterated that due to paucity hot- spot cameras the latest technology would not be used during the World Cup. ” We were always aware that there was a limited number of hot- spot cameras in the world and it was always going to be a case where we could not deploy it in all of the matches during the World Cup,” Lorgat said.”So it’s no surprise to us and I don’t believe it a setback because the other specifications we have got is sufficient to improve correct umpiring decisions by more than five per cent.So we are quite satisfied with other technologies available to support the umpires.” The technology, with its black and white images traces the trajectory of the ball hitting the bat or batsman, helps the third umpire take decisions referred to him by his on- field colleagues as part of the umpire Decision Review System (DRS). DRS will be used for the first time in a World Cup, being jointly hosted by India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
England cricket coach Andy Flower is among the few who have been reportedly shortlisted by the BCCI for the India job left vacant by Gary Kirsten, prompting a worried ECB to offer the Zimbabwean a new three-year deal.According to the Daily Telegraph, Flower, along with Duncan Fletcher, are among the shortlisted candidates for the post vacated by Kirsten after India’s World Cup triumph. The ECB, which is determined to hold on to Flower after he guided England to the Ashes and World Twenty20 triumphs, is doing all it can to prevent the former wicketkeeper from being lured by India.”Andy Flower has been offered a new three-year contract as the England and Wales Cricket Board attempts to head off any moves for their highly rated coach from India,” the report said.”Telegraph Sport understands Flower is due to meet Hugh Morris, the managing director of the England team, at the end of the month to discuss his long-term future and the direction of the England set-up. It is thought that Flower is on a rolling staff contract which offers the same protection rights as any other full-time employee.”Flower, who has been on a holiday after England were knocked out in the quarterfinals of the ODI World Cup, has been non-committal about his future. After the Ashes series, Flower had said that “personally I don’t look much further forward than a few months”.Like ECB, even the English players are keen to have Andy Flower for another term. “I can’t sing his praises highly enough,” said wicketkeeper Matt Prior.advertisement”He has been fantastic. The main thing I love about Andy (Flower) is he is honest. He is a good human being. There are no politics. He just wants to win. Any decision he makes is because he thinks it gives England the best chance of winning.”There is nothing else to him. That is really important. The other thing is he backs his players 100 per cent. To walk out on the pitch knowing your coach is backing you and giving you that support and responsibility to know and trust your game is huge,” he added.
Dominican athlete Felix Sanchez won his second gold medal on Monday night at the 2012 London Olympic Games in the 400m hurdles. This was the comeback of “Super Felix” who dominated the race with immense authority, and though injuries had weighed him down for several years, he had now returned in great form to win with a season-best time of 47.63 seconds. The US-born athlete triumphed with a show of force that hasn’t been seen since his best times when he was crowned world and Olympic champion and won all his races on the international circuit.Sanchez was in top form, stayed in the lead and in the final stretch pulled away from a tiring Puerto Rico’s Javier Culson, who paid dearly for his early effort and dropped back to take the bronze with a time of 48.10 seconds following the surge of the American Michael Tinsley, who took the silver with a time of 47.91.Super Felix, world champion at Edmonton ’01 and Paris ’03 and gold medalist at the 2004 Athens Olympics, never gave up over the years, and even when injuries kept him from doing his best, he healed time after time and confirmed it on the magic evening. With this victory he mirrored the success of Angelo Taylor of the US, who also won two Olympic titles eight years apart- Sydney 2000 and Beijing 2008- and finished fifth on Monday.
