BP well seal cements leak

first_img BP HAS finally killed the leaking Macondo well, effectively ending the five-month Gulf of Mexico ordeal, which has already cost the company $9.6bn (£6.14bn).The oil major confirmed last night that its efforts to plug the leak were completed after pumping cement into the well. April’s explosion of the Deepwater Horizon rig killed 11 people, spilled more than four million barrels of oil into the Gulf’s waters and led to the worst environmental disaster in US history.“This is a significant milestone in the response to the Deepwater Horizon tragedy and is the final step in a complex and unprecedented subsea operation,” said outgoing chief executive Tony Hayward.Admiral Thad Allen, who is overseeing the government’s response to the oil spill, confirmed the kill and called the well “effectively dead”.US President Barack Obama called the move an “important milestone” and said his administration was now focusing on ensuring the Gulf coast “recovers fully from the disaster”. Hayward said that BP is still committed to “restoring the damage done to the Gulf coast and the livelihoods of the people across the region”. BP confirms the Macondo well killed off

first_img Tags: NULL BP confirms the Macondo well killed off Monday 20 September 2010 8:57 pm whatsapp whatsapp Show Comments ▼ KCS-content BP has “effectively killed” the leaking Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico 153 days after the explosion that caused the death of 11 oil rig workers. The group confirmed that it had sealed and killed the blown out well, which leaked over four million barrels of oil into the Gulf. The five month spill, which outgoing chief executive Tony Hayward has called a “tragedy” has already cost the oil giant $9.5bn (£6.1bn).But compensation claims connected to the spill have soared since Kenneth Fienberg, the independent claims payout administrator, took control of the Gulf Coast Claims Facility (GCCF).Since 23 August, over 68,000 claims have been submitted to the fund, with 19,000 claims totalling $240m already paid. This includes a $34.5m fund for real estate brokers and agents in the area. This number is on top of the 127,000 claim payments BP made prior to the transfer to the GCCF, which totalled £399m. BP has said the $20bn escrow fund the group set out in June would be more than enough to cover the costs arising from the spill.Analysts maintain that BP still has the financial strength to meet all of its commitments to the clean-up and aftermath of the spill.“BP still believes the [escrow] fund being set up will be more than adequate to cover compensation and we continue to believe it has the necessary financial strength to meet its commitments while continuing its ongoing operations,” said Christine Tiscareno at Standard & Poor’s Equity Research. The group’s shares closed up 0.11 per cent at 411.35p after earlier in the day leading the markets higher. JD Sports eyes acquisitions

first_img JD Sports eyes acquisitions whatsapp KCS-content whatsapp Clothing and footwear retailer JD Sports Fashion said it would consider buying distressed brands or companies both in the UK and overseas as it posted a 37 per cent rise in first-half profit.“The financial pressures that certain brands or companies in the sector are suffering provides potential opportunity,” executive chairman Peter Cowgill said.Italy, Spain and Germany were “on the radar””as well as further deals in Britain. “What we are finding is that we are being approached by a number of overseas operators and we’re really just assessing those,” said Cowgill. The group, which trades as JD Sports, Chausport, Size, Bank and Scotts from 530 stores, has scope for further acquisitions with its net cash of £34.5m at the half-year end forecast by analysts to rise to about £90m by end-January 2011.Prior to yesterday’s update shares in JD Sports had increased by nearly a third over the last year. Some 57 per cent of the shares are owned by sportswear company Pentland, while Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct owns 12 percent, JD Sports made an underlying pretax profit of £19.4m in the six months to 31 July, up from £14.2m in the same period last year. Revenue increased 18.5 per cent to £383.9m, helped by the stimulus to trade from the run-up to the World Cup. Sales at UK and Ireland stores open at least a year increased 2.8 per cent over the half and were up 2.7 per cent for the four weeks to 28 August. The interim dividend was raised 15.2 per cent to 3.8 pence. Cowgill added that December and January would be key months. The business sits alongside the bank’s UK arm, led by chief executive William Rucker.Kheraj is one of the City’s most respected senior bankers, who stepped down from his former role earlier this year when JP Morgan acquired the remaining 50 per cent of Cazenove it did not already own.As well as being linked to the Lloyds role, he had also been touted as a potential successor to Stuart Gulliver, who was recently appointed as chief executive of HSBC, at the helm of the firm’s investment bank. The news of his appointment came as it emerged that Costa, who has chaired Lazard International for three years, had registered a new venture at Companies House in August. Costa and his wife Fiona are the only listed directors at the new firm, K J Costa Advisory, which is not expected to encroach upon his duties at Lazard. It has not been registered with the Financial Services Authority. Positive US data points to recovery

first_img Fresh US data has shown more signs of economic recovery, with claims for jobless benefits falling and wholesalers stocking up in anticipation of strong holiday demand.Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 17,000 to a seasonally adjusted 421,000 last week, the Labour Department said, easing doubts about the jobs market after a surprisingly weak November employment report last week. The bigger-than-expected drop in weekly new claims for unemployment benefits strengthened perceptions that a durable recovery was under way. “It’s another report that suggests the monthly employment numbers that we got last week probably understated the position in jobs, and another number that suggests we’re going to get some upside surprises in economic activity,” said Michael Strauss, chief economist of Commonfund, in Connecticut. The government said last Friday that employers added just 39,000 jobs last month, while the jobless rate spiked to 9.8 per cent from 9.6 per cent.“Assuming we get the passage of a (tax) plan in Washington, we’re probably looking at a situation where it wouldn’t surprise me if we got either first or second quarter of next year GDP growth near four per cent,” Strauss said.A separate report from the Commerce Department showed wholesale inventories rose 1.9 per cent in October even as sales increased at the fastest rate in seven months, suggesting businesses were growing optimistic about a healthy holiday shopping season.A third report from the Federal Reserve also household wealth rebounded $1.2trn (£761bn) in the third quarter after falling $1.4trn in the prior period. US stocks rose slightly on the encouraging data, but gains were limited by this week’s rise in US Treasury debt yields and a firmer US dollar.
