HOUSTON — George Floyd’s golden casket is on its way to a Texas cemetery for burial. Many mourners lined the streets to pay tribute to the slain arrest suspect as the white horse drawn carriage carrying Floyd made its way through Houston. After emotional tributes from Floyd’s family, a song from Ne-Yo, a recorded message from Joe Biden and a eulogy from the Rev. Al Sharpton, Floyd’s casket was carried on the shoulders of pall bearers out of Fountain of Praise church in Houston. Many in the family section of the church held out their hands in the direction of the casket as it departed, as the hymn “I Shall Wear a Crown” rang through the church. Others held up their phones to film it.The more than 500 face-masked mourners in the congregation for the four-hour service included actors Jamie Foxx and Channing Tatum, and J.J. Watt of the NFL’s Houston Texans. The service and upcoming burial bring to a close nearly a week of memorials and remembrances of Floyd, whose death at the hands of police in Minneapolis inspired protests around the world.
− to clamp down on issuance of licencesGovernment is worried that private firearm holders may be renting weapons to criminals and will therefore be clamping down on the issuance of gun licences to civilians. And in the fullness of time, government wants firearms to be in the hands of primarily law enforcement officers. This is according to President David Granger, who indicated that private citizens should depend on the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and the Guyana Police Force (GPF) for protection.“We would like to see fewer weapons in the hands of private citizens. It is my personal view that weapons should be used by law enforcement agencies…,” he stated during the recording of his weekly podcast “The Public Interest” which will be aired this weekend.President Granger said he wants to reduce the number of legal and illegal guns off the streets since he is concerned that even legally issued firearms are being used to conduct criminal activities.President David Granger“We have heard stories now where legitimate firearm licences holders who rent their weapons out to criminals who will go rob somebody and maybe give them a part of the booty,” he said. The President is also concerned about the illegal weapons entering Guyana from Brazil and signalled intentions to up border control to get the guns off the streets.“Our biggest problem is the fact that we have a border with Brazil which is the border’s largest producer and exporter of small arms. Many illegal weapons are traced to Brazil…,” he noted.Just last month, police unearthed a large cache of arms and ammunition in a yard in Lethem, close to the Brazilian border. To support the move to limit the number of firearms owned by civilians, government will establish a core of wardens vested with law enforcement authority. These wardens will be dispatched to operate in the gold mining, timber and tourism industries to provide protection to the respective sectors, according to the President.Already, government has hiked the fees for gun licences.Additionally, Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan had also announced that scores of gun licences will be revoked in order to weed out those that had been wrongfully issued. His announcement followed the gun amnesty programme which saw persons turning in unlicensed firearms but police reports indicate that most of the weapons collected came from hinterland locations where residents used the guns for hunting purposes and not for criminal activities.Notably, as government moves to reduce the issuance of firearms, families have been using those weapons as protection against criminals who are now perceived to be emboldened.Just on Wednesday, a suspected bandit was shot and killed by a miner during an attempted robbery at his home in the Diamond Housing Scheme, East bank Demerara.According to reports, there are at least 10,000 licensed firearms in the hands of civilians.

26 September 2007The planned R4.2-billion liquid-fuels pipeline linking Mozambique and South Africa should be completed by the end of 2009, a spokesperson for pipeline company Petroline has said.Petroline spokesperson Eugenio Silva told Reuters this week that work on the pipeline would start in mid-2008 and finish by the end of 2009. Petroline is a consortium consisting of Mozambican state-owned fuel company Petromoc and private South African and Mozambican investors.“Current market growth indicates a critical petrol and diesel shortage in Gauteng in the future, and Petroline’s pipeline and storage facility will be able to satisfy a large portion of the future demands in South Africa by means of importation via Mozambique,” Petroline said in a statement.“This should result in the decrease of the pressure on liquid fuels imports on Durban harbour and also support fuel imports to Mozambique and other southern African neighbours.”Engineering News reported last month that British-based Petrofac had also taken up a 25% equity in the venture to build South Africa’s first privately owned liquid fuels pipeline since the 1960s. The report added that Petroline plans to dredge the Maputo port to a depth of 14 metres, which would allow vessels of up to 85 000 tonnes to use it.According to Agencia de Informçao de Moçambique, the 400-kilometre pipeline will link the Mozambican port city of Matola with the town of Kendal in South Africa’s Mpumalanga province. The agency explains that of the total budget of US$600-million, $243-million will be invested in constructing a 64-kilometre section between the Matola fuel terminal and Nelspruit in Mpumalanga, with the remainder going towards extending the pipeline to Kendal. The pipeline will have a diameter of 30 centimetres and have the capacity to transport five million tonnes of fuel per year.“This project offers a great opportunity for regional co-operation and integration between South Africa and Mozambique and contribution to the upliftment of the [Southern African Development Community] region, at the same time strengthening the product supply security in South Africa,” Petroline states.SAinfo reporter Want to use this article in your publication or on your website?See: Using SAinfo material
Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Our forecast is a little wetter this morning. Rain for the second half of this weekend looks more intense, and then we also are going ahead with adding in moisture for the second half of next week. So, while we still have a bit of dry weather left, the opportunities from here forward pull back some. Today we turn out partly to mostly sunny and warm across the state. Temps will be above normal, and we should see good evaporation. Rates will be at maximum of .25” per day. Breezes will also help drying today, and we should see great opportunity for additional forage work too. The only place we need to watch for any significant action today will down right near the Ohio river…where there can be clouds and a few isolated showers. The rest of the state looks good. Tomorrow turns out partly to mostly sunny as well, although clouds can be increasing late afternoon and evening. Rain showers move in for Sunday and hold through Monday with higher rain totals now expected. On Sunday, we can see rains of a few hundredths to .5” with 700% coverage. For Monday look for .25″ to 1″ with the potential or thunderstorms. Tuesday and Wednesday are still dry for next week. Sunshine is expected to dominate, with a return to good drying conditions. The problem will be that we only end up with 2 days’ worth of good, dry weather, before rain threats reemerge Showers develop overnight next Wednesday night and continue into Thursday. Moisture does not look all that impressive, and coverage gives some holes, but we still have to deal with rain threats and lose 24 hours of drying. Rain totals will be a few hundredths to .4” and coverage 60%. After the morning showers Thursday, clouds give way to some brief sun. Friday rains are back for midday and afternoon, and they look better organized. 90% of the state can pick up .25”-.1” rain totals. The map at right shows rain potential through next Friday. We finish our 10 day window with dry weather for Saturday the 15th and Sunday the 16th. However, models are well divided on that finish, and that division is more apparent in the extended 11-16 day period as well, with one model putting rain in the forecast pretty much every day of that extended period, and other looking for perhaps 1 front for the entire time frame. Right now, we are leaning toward a drier look with a threat of precipitation closer to the start of the extended period, and then dry from Tuesday night (18th) through Friday morning. Scattered showers likely return late afternoon and evening on the 21st.
